AAMV Board Strategic Plan 2017-2020

The following strategic plan was created and approved by the AAMV Board of Directors in November 2017 to guide Board decision making and strategic thinking an provide a trajectory for the organization in the next three years.

Statement of Purpose:

For more than 25 years, the American Association for Museum Volunteers (AAMV) has been the largest professional organization devoted to supporting volunteer managers and volunteerism in the museum sector by:

      Equipping volunteer managers and volunteer programs with skills and materials to practice professional standards of volunteerism

      Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and networking

      Offering opportunities for continuing education at local, regional, and national levels

      Informing and supporting museums and volunteerism in advocacy for legislation at the local and national levels

      Accomplishing these goals in cooperation with museum directors, staff, and boards of trustees

Strategic Directives #1: Professional Standards

      Updating Best Practices for Volunteer Programs Document

      Invite comments from members and others in museum field

      Create and share Best Practices for Internships Document with professional community in 2017-2018

      Developing “So You’re Now Managing Volunteers” Document

Strategic Directives #2: Forum and Exchange of Ideas

      Website Forum - build vibrant members-only discussions on the website forum

      Newsletter - release four newsletter editions each year

      Podcast - release at least six new podcast episodes per year and release podcasts through more mediums (e.g. Apple Podcasts)

      Sample forms and documents - continue to build a robust database of sample forms and documents for members to access

      Twitter and future other social media presence - Build and grow followers and social media content to expand reach to non-members

      News section on website - update website content at least once a month

Strategic Directives #3: Continuing Education at Local, Regional, and National

      Webinars - host one webinar per calendar year in partnership with AAM

      Conference Sessions at AAM - develop session proposals, networking luncheons, and social events for the AAM annual meeting

      Regional Conferences - present or exhibit/advertise at regional conferences per year

      State Conferences - present or exhibit/advertise at statewide conferences per year

Strategic Directives #4: Advocacy

      Create an Advocacy sub-committee to work in the 2017-2018 year to define: What are we advocating for? How can/should/are we do it? What should our priorities be? What resources do we need to develop to allow for effective advocacy?

Strategic Directive #5: Building membership

      Activate regional directors to do outreach within their regions to lapsed and potential new members and engage all members in all AAMV activities

      Maintain connections between regional directors and current members

      Increase the number of members who renew memberships

      Encourage members to become directly engaged in contributing to AAMV resources and programming, including service on the AAMV Board

Strategic Directive #6: Organizational Best Practices

      Research and comply with best practices in Nonprofit field, especially regarding financial compliance and auditing
