    Hi all,

We are currently in the midst of a large renovation project and will fully reopen next November.  Therefore, it is a perfect time to strategically plan for the future and I would like to propose a few changes to the Volunteer Management structure.  As part of my proposal to our leadership staff, I would like to include some statistics from other institutions regarding staff structure.  If you don't mind sharing, may I ask:

    The name of your organization:

The current # of adult volunteers in your organization:

The number of paid employees (full time and/or part time) who work in the Volunteer Management department (I realize that titles may vary and staff may report to other departments, for example, Human Resources or Philanthropy.)

    I greatly appreciate your feedback.

    Thank you,

    Angie Smorey

    Hi Angey!

I work at the Nevada Museum of Art. Currently, our volunteer staff is just two people - myself and my coworker. We are not exclusively Volunteer Managers, but co-manage together. We are actively trying to rebuild our program as you are, and are currently holding at around 150 active adult volunteers.

I hope you get a lot of great statistics for this!

    Hi Angie!

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History combines the Volunteer and Membership Department- there is one main person over the volunteer program, and the Director of the department and the membership coordinator assist as part of their duties. There are 300 adult volunteers- when volunteers have a special relationship/duty the staff member in that department oversees their work. All staff managing/overseeing volunteer work are full time.

    Hope that helps!

    Samantha

The Museum of History and Holocaust Education has two staff who have volunteer management as part of their jobs (not one dedicated staff person), and we have 40-50 volunteers and interns/year.

    Good luck!

Seattle Art Museum has 500 volunteers and 1 full time and 1 part time staff members in the volunteer program. The volunteer program falls under the Human Resources department. Many different staff throughout the organization take on a supervisory role for volunteers in different positions - ie. our librarian oversees the library volunteers.

Thanks for asking this question! I have been interested in how we stack up to other orgs.

Hi - Our museum is Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa. We are a 500 acre open-air museum.

During 2016 we had 385 core volunteers and of that number 270 are adults. We also had just over 500 more volunteers who helped us with one-time events and I don't keep a record of their ages. A guess would be 400 are adults.

During the summer we have close to 70 paid staff and then during the winter when we are closed for general touring the number goes down to about 30 year-round staff. The only paid staff person in the Volunteer Department is me - I am the Manager of Volunteer Services.

    I hope that helps.

    Hi, All!

The Exploratorium Volunteer Program lives within the Organizational Development Dept - along with colleagues in Human Resources, Internal Communications, and Diversity.  There are 2 of us and we're full time.
