    Hello everyone!

Out of curiosity-- is your volunteer services department a standalone department or does it fall under another department, for example: education or visitor services?

If you are under a department, what was the reasoning for structuring it that way?

    Thank you for your insight!

    Hi Maria,

At Seattle Art Museum, the Volunteer Program is part of the Human Resources Department. This works well for us, as volunteers are a human resource and there is overlap around recruiting/onboarding, employee and volunteer satisfaction, professional development, retention and the occasional disciplinary issue. We use volunteers in many departments at SAM, so being in HR instead of just one department works well too.

    Hello Maria,

At the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), our Volunteer Department shifted to multiple departments or umbrellas over the course of our first years as a museum. I'd be happy to go into more detail if that would be helpful to you, but in short - we are now a department within the umbrella of Education/Public Programs and have been so for a couple of years. This has been great in many ways, particularly because of the close partnerships necessary with these teams anyway, but also because of the support of leadership within them. That being said, before being within this umbrella, we also spent a couple of years as part of HR. In many ways, I still see that as having made a great amount of sense - for many of the reasons Jenny mentioned above, and also mainly because I see us as a team that works with and for all the departments of the museum. Being able to come at things more clearly from an HR perspective with everyone felt like a clear-cut and reasonable direction. Both of these umbrellas have had their perks, depending on goals.

    Best,

    Cristina Caballero

We just created a volunteer program at the International Spy Museum and our program is under Guest Services and Operations. The reason for this is that volunteers were originally considered to only be assisting in the GS department, but we are hoping to expand in the future to things like special events, membership, admin, tours. Unsure if that will change our organizational structure. We do still have our own space (Volunteer Lounge) and do not operate in exactly the same way.
